The first day of the 2010 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships started of with numerous world records.
Germany's Daniela Schulte broke her own world record in the Women's 200m Individual Medley (SM11) with a time of 2:52.36. She was followed by Cecilia Camellini from Italy and Xie Quing from China.
In the Women's 400m Freestyle (S7) event, team USA took all three medals and a world record. Mallory Weggemann finished first in a world record time of 5:04.87, followed by her compatriots Erin Popovich and Cortney Jordan. In the Men's event, Mihovil Spanja from Croatia broke the world record in a time of 4:47.39. Great Britain's David Roberts and Jonathan Fox came in second and third respectively.
Great Britain's Paralympic hopeful for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Eleanor Simmonds, broke a world record in the 400m Freestyle (S6) event with a time of 5:27.64. Linghing Song from China took the silver medal, followed by another British team member, Natalie Jones.
Athletes from Ukraine were especially successful on the first day of the Championships. In the Women's 50m Freestyle (S2) event, all three medals were won by Ukrainian athletes. Ganna Ielisavetska won the gold medal in a world record time of 1:09.59, followed by Iryna Sotska and Darya Kapayeva.
Ukraine's Maksym Veraksa finished the Men's 200m Individual Medley (SM12) race in a world record time of 2:11.11. Russia's Sergey Punko and Alexandr Nevolin-Svetov won the silver and bronze medal respectively.(The End)
