Extra funding for sport will help develop young paralympic athletes, according to wheelchair basketballer Justin Eveson. It was said the money would not just secure the future of the Paralympic Games, but also support young athletes in every State.

Extra funding for sport in last week's Federal Budget will help develop young paralympic athletes, according to WA Institute of Sport wheelchair basketballer Justin Eveson.

The Australian representative said the money would not just secure the future of the Paralympic Games, but also support young athletes in every State.

Australian Paralympic Committee Communications Manager Tim Mannion said last week that while he was unsure of the exact figure, it was significantly more than last year.

Federal Government funds go to the Australian Sports Commission and the APC negotiates with the commission for a percentage of that.

Government funding for the Australian Paralympic Committee was due to expire next year.

President Greg Hartung said the increased spending would keep paralympians in the game and alleviate concerns that it would need to scale back programmes.

The continuation of funding also means the 2012 Paralympic Games in London will be broadcast on TV.

Eveson said he was working towards London but that would be his fourth paralympic games so he was unsure about Rio in 2016.

(The End)
