In the "digital era" of the 21st century, numbers can be seen everywhere in our daily lives. To the Chinese in particular, numbers are one of the most common and mysterious elements found in Chinese names, especially in Guangzhou, a city with a history of over 2,200 years. Consequently, there are many strange and interesting stories behind Guangzhou's numbered roads.

Road No. 1 – Yi De Road

"Yi" means "1" in Chinese, but just exactly how Yi De Lu got its name – since the road is not the first in Guangzhou – has been a curious problem for many people over the years. It is said that the road was closed and re-planned by the Qing Dynasty government in the early part of the 20th century, according to an old saying that goes "Yi De Li er Bai Shan Cong," which means everything is in order if a good plan is made.

The renowned Guangzhou Sacred Heart Stone House Cathedral stands on Yi De road. Built in 1863 and finished in 1888, the church is the only papistic construction made of granite in Southeast Asia, and one of only four gothic churches with masonry structure in the world.

Yi De Lu is also one of the busiest merchant streets in Guangzhou – known for its dried seafood shops and toy stores – and the surrounding area is filled with trading centers that were active even in ancient times.
